Eating Local, Eating Organic
Everyone wants to eat food that is delicious, nutritious and grown as close to home as possible. Unfortunately, most of the food served today travels thousands of miles and is grown by unknown faces. Until now - JenEhr Family Farm, located just outside Sun Prairie, offers organic fresh harvested fruits and vegetables for your family's dinner table.
But it's more than just local. You can find local at a farmers' market in the area every day of the week. It's about your family's food raised without the use of harmful chemicals (herbicides, insecticides, rodenticides and petro-chemical based fertilizers). It's about daily meals that nourish your body, grown without harmful chemical inputs along solid crop rotation practices that control weeds and insects. It's about following a strict set of growing standards, with an annual inspection that assures you that each morsel you consume is unaltered and as healthy as possible. JenEhr Family Farm CSA is one sure way to make sure that each meal is high in nutrition and flavor, while non-exsistent in harmful chemicals. JenEhr is a certified organic farm, with 110 certified organic acres used to grow your food in combination with solid rotations, poultry pasture, fallowed land and conservation and
Diversity is Key
CSA is about eating seasonally, eating locally and eating organically. It's about knowing your farmers, their families, staff and the land on which they farm. It's about feeling good that each week your CSA share is full of produce grown by those farmers on their farm. At JenEhr, our commitment to you is that everything in your share is grown, harvested and packaged by us, here at the farm.
Inside your share, you will find a wide range of vegetables and fruits. Some so very familiar, others brand new and unknown. But all of them are suited to growing organically here in Southern Wisconsin. All of them harvested at their ripest, juciest and best tasting, at their highest level of nutrition and taste. During the course of the 22 week season, you'll find more than 50 different vegetables or fruit in your shares. You'll find enough produce for family meals, neighborhood barbeques and gala feasts. For most families, each share contains enough to start putting small amounts of produce aside for the cold winter months of Wisconsin.
Amidst that diversity is a weekly newsletter that gives you loads of recipes for cooking, serving and preserving your bounty. The emailed newsletter arrives at your inbox before you pick up your weekly share, giving you heads up to what's coming and what you might want to have on hand for your menu, meal and shopping planning. Plus, a bonus website feature about the farm and cooking tips, available only to JenEhr CSA members.
Why CSA Matters
There are a number of ways you can get your daily food needs. Grocery stores, coops, farmers markets, delis, restaurants and the list continues. But CSA is different. CSA is about making a political and economic statement all while eating really well. It's about voting with your food dollars, that you want to eat food that is produced locally and organically by farmers you know and trust. It's about adding a real face and real lives to your daily meals. It's about keeping your food dollars in your own community, county and state. It's about money that multiplies through local stores, banks and schools instead of fleeing the state to reside far off places.
When you become a CSA member, you are making a commitment to feeding yourself and your family better. You are making a commitment paying a fair price for the labor of the farmers who feed you. You are chosing clean water, less toxic soil along with healthier lives for those who grow your food and everyone who lives downstream. Joining JenEhr's organic CSA is about making a choice to live better, healthier and more sustainably. Congratulations..
Why Choose JenEhr Family Farm
There are some great CSA farmers serving the Madison and Milwaukee areas. And while each offers a box of vegetables, there are differences that make for a better fit between farm and you.
JenEhr is:
- Certified Organic – that means we not only follow a very strict set of rules concerning what we can and cannot do in our growing practices, but we are inspected yearly by a third party certifying agency (MOSA). Being certified means something, it’s a an assurity that we’re following the non-chemical practices that you desire from a farmer raising your food. Being certified means we’re not only following the rules, but being inspected.
- Grow everything you get – Farmers Paul and Kay made a decision early on that the JenEhr CSA is about what our local farm can produce. It’s about a true relationship between the farm and you, the CSA member. We don’t buy in fruit or nuts or other items we don’t or can’t grow in this area, on this piece of land. If one particular fruit or vegetable fails (and it will, just like there are years when the tomatoes don’t pollinate or the winter squash floods away), then you’ll hear about it in the newsletter, why it’s not in your weekly share. We believe that CSA is about a partnership between you and the farmers, not simply a grocery store in a box.
- Fewer Pick Up Locations – Pick up location is one of the first criteria in deciding which CSA farm to join. If a pick up location is inconvienant, you’ll have a tougher time getting your scheduled share. But instead of more pick up locations, we’ve limited our locations so that there is always a farmer or farm staff person on site when you pick up your share. We know you have questions about what’s in the share, how to make something or why something is missing. We know you want to actually talk to someone who is working on the farm, who understands the big farm picture as well as the daily work and weather. We think that being a CSA member is about connecting to the farm in ways that go beyond simply the box of produce. We want to help you connect with the farm in a more personal way.
- Strawberry and Tomato U-Picks – We at JenEhr love growing strawberries. With more than four acres of organic berries, you’ll not only have a nice supply during the season, but your share includes coming out to the farm to pick additional strawberries as a part of your share (no additional charge). The same goes for the after Labor Day tomato U-pick, when we set aside the Sunday after Labor Day when you can come out to the farm and self-pick extra plum paste tomatoes for freezing, saucing, canning or just eating. It’s two great opportunities to spend more time on the land while adding to your CSA bounty.
- More Information – A CSA membership can be a leap of faith, but we’re there to hold your hand with lots of information. First, our pick ups are staffed, so someone who knows about the farm, the items in your share and food is available to answer your questions and help you get your food. Besides staffed pick ups, we offer an outstanding four page newsletter emailed to you before you pick up your CSA share. Even if you pick up your share every other week (half share) you still get a weekly newsletter, loaded with recipes, preserving techniques and what’s happening on the farm. Bonus website feature – Chef David Swanson of Braise in Milwaukee offers a weekly run down of all the items in your share (with pictures for easy identification) along with great recipe, preserving and preparation ideas. It’s about making CSA easy.
- Lots of payment Options – We know that paying a lump sum for your CSA share can be daunting or a budget constraint. So JenEhr offers several payment options, from monthly payments, to credit card payments, three-pay option and of course one time check, credit card, electronic withdraw. Many ways to make payment easy, convienent and fit your budget.
Health Insurance Rebate
Finally, health insurance companies get the link between eating organic food and good health - So many are offering a healthy eating CAS rebate. MACSAC offers an up-to-date list of insurance companies. It's very probable that yours is offering $50 to $200 when you join JenEhr CSA
Unlike many area CSA's, JenEhr does not offer neighborhood pick up locations. We believe strongly that you as a CSA member wants to visit the farm, talk with someone directly related to the farm intimately. So JenEhr pick up locations are based around where our knowledgeable staff can answer your questions, provide cooking direction and converse about the weather, the season and the items in your CSA share. Pick up becomes an opportunity to become more intimately involved with your CSA farm.
