STRAWBERRIES COMING IN JUNE!

The heavy layer of hay mulch on top of the strawberries makes one think that the berries are still sleeping.  But alas, that is not the case – under that warm blanket that kept the berry plants frozen all winter, they’re starting to wake up.  Within the next two weeks the blanket layer of mulch will come off, new plants will be planted and the weeding will start in earnest by the first of May.

By the middle of May we’ll see the first blossoms and within 4 weeks of that, the first plump ripe red berries.  So, please mark your calendars now for the 2008 season, checking the website as early as the first week of June. Also, sign up for the email newsletter which will update you on U-Pick strawberry options here at the farm.

Just some Organic Strawberry Info -

Strawberries at JenEhr Farm are grown and certified following organic (MOSA) growing standards. What that means is we grow these delicious berries without the use of any chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. That means all the weeds are hand pulled (more than 300 hours of weeding on the 1 acre field), plants are cultivated and fertilization is done in the fall with compost.

Why do we go to all this trouble? The taste is the first reason. We believe that strawberries grown without the use of petroleum-based chemicals simply taste better. We believe that it's a more sustainable farming practice, even if it leads to some stiff limbs at the end of the day. And finally, its how we want to eat and the kind of quality we want to provide for our family, friends and neighbors.
